Hi everyone!
CC won a Best of the Bay Award from the Guardian for our Erotic Reading Circle! Special thanks to Jen Cross, who helped me raise this great old event from the dead.

We are also closing in on a new space and hope to have good news soon. Meanwhile, we're having fun this month with plenty of co-sponsored and benefit events -- keep a special eye out for detail about the Margaret Cho movie night at the Castro on 8/16. Good Vibes needs more volunteers to help out with it; if you can pitch in, please email Camilla at clincoln@goodvibes.com -- you'll get two general admission tix to the movie as thanks!

The Sex Ed Salon date is still up in the air, but I'll have the final to you by mid-month if not sooner. Sorry about the confusion! Also coming up: Perverts Put Out (Folsom Edition on the eve of Folsom St. Fair -- 9/29), another session of Sex Ed Skills: How to Be a Top Presenter (with Charlie Glickman and Howard Bloom) on 9/8, and probably a visit from Deborah Sundahl in September!

Sunday evening 8/12, 7 pm -- PLEASURE AS SPIRITUAL PRACTICE

Most spiritual traditions -- both Eastern and Western -- take a dim view of pleasure. In Tantra, however, pleasure can be used as a tool for spiritual growth. Consciousness is the key to transforming mundane pleasure into something more profound. In this workshop, we will explore both the theory and practice of bringing consciousness to pleasurable experience and help you begin exploring your pleasure more fully and intentionally.

Mark Michaels (Swami Umeshanand Saraswati) and Patricia Johnson (Devi Veenanand) are co-authors of The Essence of Tantric Sexuality (Llewellyn Worldwide) and Tantra for Erotic Empowerment: The Key To Enriching Your Sexual Life (Llewellyn Worldwide, March 2008). A devoted married couple, they have been teaching Tantra and Kriya yoga together since 1999. Their teachings have been featured in numerous publications, including The Village Voice, Redbook, Now Magazine, Jane and Breathe. Senior students of Dr. Jonn Mumford, Michaels and Johnson have been named lineage holders of the OM Kara Kriya® system for the Americas and Europe. Both have studied Bhakti Yoga with Bhagavan Das, Tantra with Dr. Rudy Ballentine, and have been featured in Dr. Judy Kuriansky’s The Complete Idiot’s Guide to Tantric Sex

*Saturday, August 18, 8 pm -- SF DRAG KING CONTEST
The 12th annual San Francisco Drag King Contest, produced by DragStrip Productions, is the biggest and longest running Drag King Competition in the World and, according to the San Francisco Weekly, "A Parade of Gender-Bending Eye Candy." The internationally acclaimed outlandish celebration of Sex, Drag and Rock and Roll will bring out the animal in every attendee and participant as part of the proceeds will benefit for PAWS (Pets Are Wonderful Support).
"The San Francisco Drag King Contest is a mash-up of the Miss America Pageant, American Idol, Halloween and a Monster Truck Show," states impresario Fudgie Frottage. "We have every kind of drag from suits to fruits; studs to puds -- Everything from Elvis impersonators to Leather Daddies, Wrestlers, Contortionists, Hillbillies, Clowns, Jocks, and their female counterparts. It's a mind-boggling, dress-to-impress occasion, where part of the fun is just trying tell the performers and audience members apart." Considered to be "one of the most boisterous parties of the year," by the San Francisco Chronicle, and "Dripping and swaggering with machismo" by the San Francisco Weekly, the San Francisco Bay Guardian also states, "Prepare to be amazed by the variety, astounded by the veracity, and properly impressed by the figurative and literal balls on display."
Virile Virtuoso, Fudgie Frottage, "The Man with The Biggest Balls in Show Business," and Internationally Renowned Burlesque Chanteuse, Comic and Siren, The Indra, as "The Indro vs. The Indra", a bi-sexual, bi-polar, half male, half female character, will preside over the festivities as Masters (and 1/2 Mistress) of Ceremonies.
The star-studded event will showcase Buck Naked, winner of the 2006 Solo King Category for his dapper style and scandalous dancing girls, The Slickk Bois, 2006 troupe winners for their provocative boy band choreography, gender illusionist Arty Fishal and the live, hip hop group The Momma's Boyz. In addition, rock band Wood, voted "Best of The Bay for 70's anthems and facial hair" by the San Francisco Bay Guardian, will also perform. And - as always - the gender bending contestants will be the center of attention.
With contestants baring such monikers as L. Ron Hubby, Seimen Marcus, Papi Cock, and Sherwood Suck, expect an evening of hilarious entertainment and outrageous theatrical performances where lip-synch, live rock, fetish, burlesque, hip-hop, rap, interpretive dance and shtick meet and compete.
"The San Francisco Drag King Contest has inspired me to find my inner dude, and I'm half-way there,” says super star, The Indra. I performed my half man, half woman act recently at the London Burlesque Fest and received everything from dropped jaws to standing ovations. My motto: "If it doesn't look phallic enough, turn it sideways."
Contestants are judged on talent, creativity, studliness, sex appeal, originality, humor, make-up/facial hair and fashion by the illustrious panel of nationally known celebrity judges, including 2005 Drag King and 2004 Mr. Trannyshack Jay Walker, Simone DeLaGhetto of Harlem Shake Burlesque, Sister Roma of Hot House Video, and special guest Animal, (formerly of the internationally-known musical duo, Bitch and Animal).

Following up on Charlie and Howard's terrific class for sex educators, we're reviving the Sex Ed Salons that used to happen at Good Vibrations. Any and all sex educators are welcome, whether you are completely academic, work for an agency, or take it to the streets! We all have a lot in common as well as a lot of differences and insights to share. This will be an ongoing event every two months, and on alternate months we will revive the Sex Ed Students' Salons! (Students are very welcome to come to this event, too, but the students' salon will have more space for talking about various programs and students' specific issues.) This month's host will be Carol Queen. Spread the word!

$5-up sliding scale, but no one turned away for lack of funds. Location: Probably will be held at the Berkeley Good Vibrations -- we are trying to make every other Sex Ed Salon an East Bay event. Stay tuned!

FOUR AMAZING ONE-OF-A-KIND PRIVATE BAY AREA LITERARY READINGS/SALONS/PARTIES! (Carol reads on 8/26!)

www.suspectthoughts.com/salons.htm

For the second time in less than two years Greg and Ian and Suspect Thoughts Press are being kicked out of their home and office space. More details will follow ASAP but our move will have to happen fairly quickly. We need to raise some serious money fast to help with the moving costs. We weren't expecting this and we don't want to have to use Suspect Thoughts Press production money. In all our years here we've never organized a fundraiser for the press...but now we really need it.

So we're throwing a series of private house salons. And the list of performers is amazing! Each afternoon salon will include short readings/performances, light non-alcoholic refreshments, and a bit of meet and greet. We're requesting a suggested $10-$20 donation per person per salon. Since these salons are being hosted in private residences/spaces we're requesting that all attendees RSVP to gregw@suspectthoughts.com ahead of time. Once confirmed you'll receive additional details as to actual location.

COME TO ONE OR COME TO ALL FOUR!

Femina Potens, a San Francisco gallery and performance space featuring visual and performance art, film and video, literary arts, and spoken word by women and transgendered artists, presents the first visual arts exhibition in its new home, a prominent gallery space in the vibrant Castro district.

On Saturday, August 18th from 7 to 10 pm, the gallery will host an opening reception for I Like Long Walks and Sci-Fi Movies: New Work by Eliot Daughtry and Francesca Berrini. In I Like Long Walks, the artists explore playful compositions of visual language across time, place, and gendered space, employing familiar and idealized images of past, present, and future through various combinations of dated and contemporary styles, physical materials, and bodies.

Daughtry's work includes large-scale installations and illustrations of robots and their eerie urban landscapes. Drawn to the non-gendered bodies and embodiments robots can represent, Daughtry explores androgynous and non-binary manifestations of robotic gender in youthful, sinister scenarios using papercuts, ink drawings, and laser print transfer on panel and paper. Berrini's collages of found illustration pair pin-up girls with dinosaurs, space monsters with colonial sea-side villages, and 1950s winter catalogue models spearing fish beneath a giant spaceship. In Berrini's surreal storybook worlds, blonde bombshells and brunette vixens romp, roam, and rebel amidst fantastical lands full of space and sea creatures, Leave It to Beaver family dinners, Jurassic lagoons, and old-style travel and leisure.

At the crossroads of art, technology and cultural politics, Eliot K. Daughtry investigates personal mythologies. With materials as simple as cut paper and as ephemeral as video projection, he combines conceptual premise with disciplined craft. His current work explores the need to assign machines and objects human or animal qualities, such as gender in robots or faces in buildings. Eliot is a California College of the Arts MFA candidate.

Francesca Berrini graduated from the Rhode Island School of Design with concentrations in sculpture and design. Berrini now works primarily in two-dimensional found collage, including surreal greeting cards and ambitious, meticulous, and lavish maps produced from old ones, forming new layers, contours, and boundaries using imaginative, magical, and political creative cartography. After moving to the Pacific Northwest, Berrini began showing selected work with Bluebottle Gallery. She lives and works near Portland , Oregon.

Saturday, 8/25 -- Carol presents new workshop "Authentic Sex & Love: Embracing Your Erotic Self" at Eyes Wide Open: LGBT Retreat

Authentic Sex & Love: Embracing Your Erotic Self
We may have been out for years and have embraced ourselves as gay or lesbian -- but we don't always get as much community support for coming out as our *true* sexual selves, because we are not all alike in what we desire, the kind of relationships we want to create, and how we respond to intimacy and pleasure. Join Carol Queen to explore erotic individuality, learn about communicating about sex, desire, and difference, and talk about seeking partners compatible with who we are.

My bio:
Carol Queen, Ph.D. is a cultural sexologist who has written or edited eleven books of essays, sexual self-help, and erotica, including Exhibitionism for the Shy. She's appeared in several sex-related documentaries, including Dildo Diaries (exploring why sex toys are illegal in Texas) and The O Tapes, about women's orgasm, and has been interviewed for many magazines and TV shows about sexuality. She is one of the owners of Good Vibrations in San Francisco (www.goodvibes.com) and is the founding director of the Center for Sex & Culture (www.sexandculture.org). SACRED SEXUALITY & SEXUAL HEALING FOR ABUSE SURVIVORS
August 25th and August 26th -- Tiburon, CA

with Stephen Braveman LMFT, http://www.bravemantherapy.com/
Francesca Gentillé www.LifeDanceCenter.com
and Lori Grace Star, MA www.CelebrationsOfLove.com

ESPECIALLY DESIGNED FOR SEXUAL ABUSE SURVIVORS
Can be taken with a partner, beloved, or friend
Also, open to and valuable for people who work professionally with survivors. IF you are a counselor, educator or therapist, this is an AASECT Approved Continued Education Workshop.

BACKGROUND:
Healing from sexual abuse and sexual trauma can take many shapes and some of the most powerful tools for recovery are grounded in sacred intimacy practices from around the world. This workshop is a safe, very confidential weekend in which you and your partner will learn Tantra (Eastern sacred sexuality) basics & Western Sacred sexuality basics such as partnered breath and eye-gazing exercises, in conjunction with Western sexological and psychotherapy methods that transform emotional road blocks into minor speed bumps on the path of love, and also sensate focus methods. Blending both perspectives will help you to celebrate a much safer, happier and healthier intimate, sexual life together. It may be taken with a partner, friend, lover or anyone with whom the survivor feels safe.

Participants will practice the techniques learned while remaining fully clothed. No direct genital touch will occur during the workshop. Both days are dedicated to learning various techniques, while taking into account the special needs and circumstances sexual abuse survivors and their partners face — with special attention to emotional concerns and how to support healing and well-being.

NOTE: While this workshop is for survivors and those close to them, it is also open to clinicians and sexologists. The workshop will teach methods they can use with their clients and meets the requirements of the American Association of Sexuality Educators, Counselors and Therapists. It is Approved for 14 AASECT CE Credits. www.aasect.org. Clinicians and other helping professionals will also gain knowledge and skills to help them support sexual abuse survivors and their partners. You can immediately start using these methods with your own clients within proper ethical and legal boundaries.

Please wear loose-fitting, comfortable clothing, such as yoga pants; we'll be moving, stretching, etc.
Books, CDs and other relevant materials will be available for purchase.
Coffee, tea, water and lite snacks (fruits and nuts, for example) will be available. Please, feel free to bring your own preferred snacks if you wish.
